Good Judy's

We painted this mural for the best coffee and bagel business maybe ever: Good Judy’s in Urbana, IL. The owners gave us their brand guide and a picture of the eponymous late, great Judy Garland and said “Oh, do it however you like. We trust you!” which is the nicest thing you can possibly say to an artist.

Sketch

We knew if we could get the portrait right, the rest would follow, so we started with a sketch. We kept two words in mind during this phase: welcoming and glamorous.

Initial concepts

Next, we needed to incorporate the company colors in an exciting way. We initially thought of coloring the portrait in halftone (dots), but decided it looked a little too comic book and moved them to the background. I picked a star motif for the next option because it fit the mid-century vibe and, well, Judy is a star!

Ultimately, the owners chose the second option and we’re very glad that they did! We felt the arch shape evoked both the rainbow and bagels, as well as tying in to the Bauhaus wallpaper in their brand guide. The owners said they wanted a statement piece, but unifying the design with the existing space and decor is always something we keep in mind.

outlining

We used a projector to place the image exactly where we wanted it on the wall and outlined the whole portrait in blue chalk, followed by paint. We added color as a middle stage before refreshing the lines so everything looked crisp.

We were thrilled to work on such a meaningful project and love how it turned out!
